Now that the first snow has fallen my thoughts go automatically to Christmas! I have no choice in the matter....it's just where my little brain waves have to go! :o) So, because I wanted to know what to expect here in Slovakia for my first Christmas, I asked Katka some questions about the traditions here. She said they don't have Santa Claus here. Can you believe that?! No Santa!! So I asked her what they do if there is no Santa.....she said there is a St. Nicholaus, but he comes on December 6th and leaves fruits and sweets in shoes that the children have shined up the night before. Then, on Christmas Eve.....it's Baby Jesus who gives the gifts!! What a concept, huh?! I love it!
A couple of months ago I was asked to have a children's English night with some of the little ones (around 2 years old) where I would sing (teach) children's songs in English and look at picture books pointing out and naming the English words for everything. We meet on Monday and Wednesday nights for about an hour and the parents stay with the kids and me so I'm not there alone. Its been fun to sing and look at books and basically just say as many English words over and over again that we can think of. It is starting to work now too as I hear a few of the children starting to say English words from the songs we sing. The parents are also singing the songs at home with them and doing as much as they can there too.
I had an idea that it would be fun to read the candy cane story to the kids and have a print out of it in Slovak with a candy cane attached for each child But I've looked everywhere and haven't been able to find them, so I asked Katka about them and she told me they don't have candy canes in Slovakia. So I guess I will print out pictures instead....but it won't be the same! :o( Oh well, I guess I'll be the only one who will know what they're missing!
Blessings to you all!
