All Saints Day

Last weekend was a big weekend here in Martin, Slovakia (and other places I suppose). It was All Saints Day and they take it very seriously here. This is the day they take candles and flowers, (the artificial kind), to the graves of their loved ones and have a small private ceremony honoring their dead. The candles burn all night long and is quite a thing to see at night. I guess we could liken it to our Memorial Day except the feel is different. Memorial Day remembers those who have fallen in war, and is something we do nationally. All Saints Day remembers all those who have died, whether by war or not and is privately held by each family. It was a very meaningful event for them and for me.
